Colina
de Luz, Christian Home for Children
Providing a loving home and quality
education for children
Located just outside Tijuana, Mexico,
Colina de Luz (Hill of Light) is home for 62 boys and girls.
How did these children end up at this home? Some have been abused,
some orphaned, some abandoned, reflecting the poverty that surrounds
their family life and community. Situated on top of a hill,
as the name suggests, Colina not only offers a literal and figurative
oasis to these desperately needy children, but truly provides
a home.
Jim and Susan Drake are two of the three Founders of Colina
de Luz (Hill of Light), Christian Home for Children. It was
founded July 4th, 1987. God had touched Jim and Susan's hearts
(as He continues to today) for the many needy children in and
around the Tijuana, Mexico area.
Over the years Colina has become a ministry of faith and a "Home"
for hundreds of children. It continually houses an average of
60-80 boys and girls ranging in age from infants to 23-year-old
students. The staff, which number 18 or more, work together to see the highest possible quality of care is maintained.
Colina de Luz is considered by the Mexican Government to be
one of the finest Homes of its kind. Colina was privileged in
1999 to win one of two Golden Angel Awards— the other was given
to Shriners Hospital in Los Angeles.
Colina's kids are taught to "Walk in the Light as He (Christ
Jesus) is in the Light". Principals of love, a relationship
with their Creator and Savior, and love for others, especially
the needy, are strongly stressed. The children learn integrity,
responsibility for themselves and others, and cleanliness. They
are encouraged to set their goals high, and do their best to
maintain good grades in school.
God has laid it upon the heart of this ministry to reach out
to the many that live in poverty.
The Ministry at Colina De Luz includes hosting long- or short-term
mission groups of up to 40, providing comfortable housing, and
meals as well as opportunities to minister locally and to provide outreaches for churches with vacation bible school (VBS) and/or construction
projects. For more information, click the Get
Involved tab.
